Trying to find the cheapest caravan insurance may be your natural inclination – but there may be another way of looking at this.
Purchasing the cheapest caravan insurance may be relatively easy but that may not, in itself, tell you anything about the suitability (or otherwise) of the cover provided.
Of course, if you’re fortunate enough to never need to make a claim then that may be the end of the story because the cover provided may never be tested. Yet that may invalidate any logic in purchasing insurance in the first place.
Insurance exists to provide you with a degree of financial protection in case you are unfortunate, so you will need to select caravan insurance that will deliver against your expectations.
Take, for example, the question of new for old caravan insurance.
Some policies may provide new for old caravan insurance – but only for caravans that have been exclusively owned by you since new. Other policies may offer such protection for caravans that were pre-owned before you purchased it, providing they are less than three years old. Some may even offer new-for-old cover if your caravan is up to 5 years old, though in that case they may require you to have been the sole owner.
The point is that if you have low-cost caravan insurance or expensive cover, in the event of the claim, neither situation will concern you because you will no longer be thinking about the price but instead, trying to deal with the reality of the cover provided by the policy.
What this means is that when you’re evaluating caravan insurance, it might be prudent to think carefully about whether or not an individual policy is going to provide you with the peace of mind you need when thinking about your caravan and the risks it faces.
Taking the above example, a lower cost policy may be exactly that – but if you wish to be sure you have new-for-old replacement and if the policy doesn’t provide it, then its low cost may be of no importance to you.
In reality, what is the cheapest caravan insurance for someone else may not prove to be cheap for you if it fails to provide you with the cover you need in an emergency. The conclusion may be that it’s necessary to read the policy detail carefully before getting too focused on the price.
