Motor caravan insurance is not the same thing as regular car insurance nor is it the same thing as insurance for touring caravans.

Most people, including those not even remotely interested in motor caravans, could probably hazard a guess or two as to why this may be the case including:

  • a motor caravan typically contains much more in the way of fittings, fixtures and contents than does the standard car;
  • motorhomes tend to be a fair bit bigger that a normal family car and may therefore need special provisions when it comes to breakdowns etc;
  • in a similar vein, if you have breakdown cover then there are policies that can supply alternative holiday accommodation because if your motor caravan is towed away, it is not just your means of transportation that is lost;
  • with heating, cooking and washing facilities installed, there’s perhaps more scope for things to go wrong here too.

Of course, as you may understandably expect, motor caravan insurance (also known as motorhome insurance) tends to be more expensive than insurance for a standard car but on the other hand that greater cost may also provide you with greater peace of mind that you have insurance cover that is up to the job.

Which is not to say that anyone would or should be prepared to pay over the odds for motor caravan insurance, of course. That is why you may find that there are a number of ways that you may be able to work with the insurance companies to try and help keep costs down.

For example:

  • be realistic about the amount of European travel you intend to do over the year ahead – there’s little point in paying for continental cover that you don’t need;
  • try to limit the number of younger drivers on your policy – motor insurance is probably one of the few areas of life where being older and more mature is typically beneficial;
  • fit alarms and security devices above what is a mandatory requirement of your caravan insurance policy;
  • try and keep your motor caravan parked off road, in your garden or driveway, when it is not in use;
  • remember that insurance for a motor caravan typically may only provide cover for recreational use rather than for daily commuting.

As with many other areas of life, it may make sense to rely on the expertise and knowledge of specialists when it comes to things a little out of the ordinary. Motor caravan insurance may be one of these cases so it may pay, in the long run, to get some help from the experts, such as ourselves.
