The trend for being environmentally friendly has led a whole new generation of Brits to take caravan holidays, the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) says.
However as about 5,000 touring caravans are stolen every year, it is vital that caravanners take out caravan insurance to protect them financially.
A BIBA spokesman, said: “More and more people are buying caravans in the UK. It used to be that you had to be over 50 before you ever thought about that sort of holiday. The market generally for caravans is a lot wider than it used to be.
“If you look at issue of climate change and carbon footprints, we’d all like to think that more of us are going to start taking holidays in the UK and be looking at different means of doing that. And caravans could deliver one of the outlets. It is a growth industry.”
He added that people going on caravanning holidays abroad should check that their caravan insurance policy covers European travel.
“There are two aspects to this,” he explained. “There is the liability risk of the caravan when it’s attached to a vehicle and there is also damage to the caravan itself.
For first timers he added: “The attraction is that it is very simple. The most difficult part of caravanning is learning to reverse. And anyone thinking of buying a caravan for the first time should go on some kind of training course to enable them to do this safely.”
