Shetland caravan park needed as more visitors arrive

A new caravan park to be opened next year will be the northernmost in the UK and is needed because so many people are now travelling to the islands with caravans.

The Unst Youth Centre Trust is creating a six-berth caravan park on the island of Unst, thanks to a £44,525 grant from HIE Shetland.

“There are a growing number of people visiting Shetland with caravans, and to have a dedicated area for them on Unst is going to be wonderful,” explained the youth trust’s secretary Alison Hunter.

Fiona Stirling, HIE Shetland’s Unst response team leader, added: “These new facilities will help diversify the range of places to stay in Unst and encourage new visitors.”

“More people will stay longer on the island to enjoy the growing range of attractions and that should have a knock on benefit for the rest of Unst.”

The number of people visiting Unst has steadily increased over recent years, with the former RAF Saxa Vord base having been converted into a visitor centre for those travelling to the island.
