Pen-Y-Llan – Site Review (Adults Only) – Independent Site & Certified Location [Cl] – Camcs Members Only

Date of Visit:    August/September 2022

Overall View

Pen-y-Llyn is located between Treaddur Bay and Rhosneigr in the north-western part of Anglesey. It is an adult only site comprising three fields and a small, certified location at the rear. The site is easily accessed from the A55, please see arrival video HERE.

Overall the upkeep and maintenance of this site is immaculate. It is a level site with good roads across the site. Access and on-site security is taken care of via a barrier system which you use your mobile phone to access.

The site is open between March and October with the CL being open all year for CAMC members only.

Facilities

All pitches are fully serviced with grey water and drinking water to each pitch and the EHU. It is 10amps.

There are toilet and wash hand basin facilities in each field except the CL. These are done to an extremely high standard of presentation and are very well maintained. In field one there are the showers, a warm water dog wash and an Elsan point. It should be noted that they only allow you to use green fluid. There is an Elsan disposal point in each field, the CL using the top field services.

In field two there is the usual toilet block including a dishwashing area, a washing machine at cost, good local information, and a book exchange. At the time of writing this review there was no distinct equipment to assist a person with disabilities to use those site facilities. This was however raised by me directly with the owners who are looking at this situation further.

In field two there is a motorhome service point.

That is a small number of essential supplies available by the main building, these are on an honesty payment system. They do stock green Elsan fluid.

A fish and chip van, local to the site, visits on a Thursday evening and offers the usual fayre. Prices are reasonable and the quality is very good. It is possible to order food to be delivered from a variety of fast-food establishments in the area.

There is a fully enclosed and secure dog walk around the edge of the site and off lead exercise is possible. Bins and poop bags are also provided.

The local bus service X4 passes the entrance to the site and it possible to flag this down. It travels between the site and Holyhead, and it is possible to make connections from there.

Cyclists are well catered for as the area is flat and there are quiet lanes for use.

Review of Site Pitch

Each individual patch is separated buy a small hedge and are either hard standing, part hard standing and part grass or fully grass. Your car is parked by your outfit either to the side or in front dependant on which field you are located.

The pitches are very generous in size and are all level. The pitches are orientated to face the sun and the distant scenery of Snowden.

There is free, very high speed, WiFi across the site and I found it to be one of the best services I have encountered.

Mobile phone on EE was a very strong 5G. Vodafone was similar on 4G.

TV signal was very strong just using the vans aerial and a large number of channels were available.

Around and about

Any visit to Anglesey should start by looking at www.visitanglesey.com

As I was in the NW of the island, I focused my visits on this area.

The site is close to RAF Valley and Anglesey airport, plane spotting is a regular occurrence. The planes only operate during working hours Monday to Friday, not at weekends or bank holidays.

Two main beaches in the area are Treaddur Bay and Rhosneigr. Treaddur Bay is a half moon bay with a lovely sandy beach and during the summer months half the beach is dog free, and the other half allows dogs. Safe shallow swimming is possible. Car parking is to the rear of the beach where toilet facilities including disabled access are available. There are a range of cafes and restaurants plus some local corner shops. It is also possible to launch your boat if you wish. It is possible to access Rhosneigr beach involving a 20-minute walk from the site via Cymyran Beach – it is a much bigger beach but does not have the same facilities, there are car parks with toilets and disabled access in the village, but this is a distance from the beach itself. It is however possible to park closer to the beach if necessary. There are a few cafes and a fish and chip shop, a small local supermarket and a sports and leisure shop by the beach.

Slightly further afield is Holyhead where there is a retail park just off junction 3 of the A55. Here you will find large supermarkets, fuel stations, takeaway food shops and a range of clothing, household, and similar shops.

Holyhead has two large country parks on its outskirts. Both are dog friendly and during the summer months a limited catering offering is usually available. There are toilet facilities for all at both locations including car parking. Further details can be found by clicking on the links below.

Penrhos Coastal Park  is free of charge.

Holyhead Breakwater Country Park  is chargeable although blue badge holders should be able park for free.

Both are level sites in the main and in Penrhos Coastal Park you can sit and watch the mud flats and estuary, when the tide is out, as it is full of wildlife. There are plenty of benches to sit on and a pleasant circular walk on good pavement is possible.

Holyhead Breakwater Country Park, as it name suggests, is based on the old quarry which was used to build the breakwater at Holyhead port. It is possible to sit and watch the Irish ferries coming and going from the port. There are exhibitions and information boards/rooms giving you information on the history of the site.

A new find for me on this trip was the Harbourside Bistro which is located between Holyhead town and the quarry Country Park. It is dog friendly and good access with parking on the doorstep. They offer a wide menu to suit all tastes. I had the most delicious lunch sitting outside in the glorious sunshine and the service was excellent. www.harbourfrontbistro.co.uk

Summary

This is a beautiful site in a great location, facilities, with one exception, are of the highest quality and the owners are very pleasant and helpful without being intrusive. I very much enjoyed my stay here and would definitely return.

An adults only site which offers you the ability to visit any part of the island should you so wish or to have a relaxing holiday by your caravan or motorhome.
