What is covered in static caravan insurance?

This will depend on whom you buy your cover from, and the individual policy terms and conditions as well as the features and benefits. Typically, you can expect insurance for a static home to include all or some of the following elements of cover:

  • fire;
  • storm damage or other extreme weather;
  • theft or attempted theft;
  • malicious damage;
  • contents insurance (if required)
  • accidental damage; and
  • public liability cover.

The list is by no means exhaustive and different static caravan insurance policies and providers may include different risks as standard. Ensure you fully understand any policy exclusions, too.

How much does it cost to insure a static caravan?

The cost of caravan insurance premiums will to be influenced by a number of things, including but not restricted to:

Caravan insurance value

The value of the caravan (and its contents, if contents cover is also required).

Here the level of insurance needs to reflect the worst case scenario in which the static caravan is totally destroyed and needs to be replaced. Some policies may offer replacement as new – for caravans less than a certain age – whilst others may provide settlement on the basis of the valuation immediately before the insured event.

Valuation of the contents of your static caravan is also an important consideration and, once again, any settlement may be on the basis of new for old replacement or after the deduction of wear and tear – the former generally commanding a higher price in premiums.

Security

The more you do to improve the security of your static caravan, the lower the risk from theft, attempted theft and vandalism. In recognition of that lowered risk, you are likely to gain a discount on the cost of the premiums you pay.

The level of security might be evaluated not only with respect to the caravan itself – door and window locks, smoke detectors and intruder alarms, for example – but also with reference to the overall management of the park on which your caravan is sited.

Whatever security measures you are able to demonstrate, however, you might want to keep in mind that most insurers are likely to require additional steps during those periods when the caravan is left unoccupied or when the park is closed for the season. These measures might include the draining down of water systems, disconnection of gas and electricity supplies and, additional tethering of the caravan.

Letting

One of the attractions of owning a static caravan may be the opportunity to earn extra cash by letting it when you are not using it yourself. You might need to pay more for your insurance if you intend letting out your holiday home to ensure it is adequately protected. This is because there is a business element to this, which potentially leaves you and you caravan vulnerable to extra risks.

Do I have to use the site owners’ insurance?

There are hundreds of static caravan parks in the UK housing peoples’ holiday homes.

Until recently the owners of these static caravans generally purchased their static caravan insurance from the park owners. This has begun to change, however, as other insurers have made their rates more competitive to particularly target this business away from the park owners – somewhat like the way you no longer automatically insure your home with your mortgagee.

The owners or management of the park on which your caravan is pitched are almost certain to offer static caravan insurance – and may be entitled to ask for proof that you have such cover – but in most cases you need not be restricted to just this source can source your own insurance caravan quotes.
