Caravan holiday home insurance: Protect your static or touring caravan today

Have you got a static holiday caravan? If you have just bought a caravan holiday home, you may be excitedly making plans about the holidays you are going to have, come rain or shine! But don’t forget about caravan holiday home insurance!

Why do I need static home insurance?

Static home insurance is important because it provides financial protection against various risks. Unlike standard home insurance, static caravan insurance is designed specifically for holiday homes, covering risks that homeowners’ policies might not include.

The level of cover you receive depends on your chosen provider, the policy terms, and any additional benefits included. Generally, static home insurance may include or have options for:

  • fire damage;
  • storm damage;
  • flood damage (if applicable – some static homes may be excluded);
  • theft and attempted theft;
  • malicious damage and vandalism;
  • contents insurance (if required, for personal belongings inside the caravan);
  • accidental damage (often optional);
  • public liability insurance (essential if you rent out your static home).

This list is not exhaustive, as different insurers may include or exclude certain risks as standard. Always review the policy details carefully and ensure you understand any exclusions before purchasing.

Do I have to take the site owner’s holiday caravan insurance?

In most cases, you are not obliged to take the site owner’s static caravan insurance policy, you are free to get your own static caravan insurance quote. Do note, however, that some may charge a small fee and ask that they see your schedule with another insurer. However, even if they do, you may still be able to make savings on the cost of your cover, even after you had paid the fee!

How much does static caravan insurance cost?

Until we have all of your details, it is difficult to say how much your caravan holiday home insurance may cost. Whether you use our service or look elsewhere, important factors that may influence the cost may include:

  • the make, model and age of your static home. The value of your static caravan is a significant factor. Higher-value caravans typically cost more to insure;
  • the location of your caravan can impact the cost. Caravans in areas prone to flooding, for example, may have higher premiums;
  • the site. If the site is a member of a safe sites scheme then you may be entitled to a discount because insurers may recognise the importance of well patrolled, safe sites in bringing down the risks of crime;
  • the level of cover you require;
  • whether you elect to pay a voluntary excess on top of the standard excess (the excess is the first part of any successful claim that you agree to be liable for). Choosing a higher excess can lower your premiums, but it means you’ll pay more out of pocket in the event of a successful claim;
  • letting your static home. If you plan to let out your static caravan – perhaps for the times when you won’t be there – you may face higher insurance costs due to the business element involved, exposing your caravan to additional risks.

What will the policy be like?

No two caravan holiday home insurance policies will be identical. Policies and their terms, conditions and benefits can vary. Accordingly, aside from the price, the points you may want to concentrate on may include:

  • the details. What does the cover entail? And what are your obligations under the policy? (For example, many insurers will ask that you drain down the heating systems over Winter etc);
  • the excess. What is the minimum claim amount the insurer may entertain?
  • If you have insurance on a new for old basis, what is the age limit of your static home? At Cover4Caravans, we offer new for old cover for static caravans up to 10 years of age – regardless of the number of previous owners! (Your sum insured MUST represent the current replacement cost);
  • exclusions and limitations. Is there a maximum value for personal effects covered under the contents part of the static caravan insurance policy? It is also important to know what is excluded from your cover.
